Baghdad, Iraq, 16 October 2016 - The Ministry of Agriculture in Iraq, in cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, celebrated the World Food Day under the patronage of H.E. Minister of Agriculture Eng. Falah Hassan Al-Zaidan and with the participation of the United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Iraq, Ms. Lise Grande.

World Food Day is a day of action against hunger, where people around the world come together to declare their commitment to eradicate hunger in our lifetime.
In his welcoming address, H.E. Minister of Agriculture Mr. Al-Zaidan stated that Agriculture is one of the main economic activities that contribute to the national economy. It is also a well-known fact that national security is very much linked to food security, and food security depends primarily on the provision of food from local agricultural production.
The United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Iraq stated that FAO has done and continues to do terrific work in Iraq, supporting the agriculture sector in Iraq and serving as a true partner during difficult times in Iraq; helping families who have been impacted by conflict; and helping to modernize agriculture institutions throughout the country. Ms. Grande further stated that FAO is an important partner in the areas newly liberated from ISIL.
Dr. Fadel El-Zubi, FAO Representative in Iraq, emphasised in his message that World Food Day is a very special occasion, where FAO and partners celebrate under the theme “Climate is Changing, Food and Agriculture Must too,” with a focus on raising awareness about the actions people around the world can take to mitigate and adapt to climate change. Dr. El-Zubi called for renewed commitment to sustainable agricultural development in Iraq and to face the current challenges in the agriculture sector.
The ceremony was concluded with two presentations on Empowerment of rural women and Fish New Techniques in Iraq, in partnership with FAO.
