Erbil, 6 December 2010: Iraqi civil society representatives completed this week in Erbil a series of four training sessions in shadow reporting to the UN human rights treaty bodies. Shadow reports, often called ‘alternative reports’, are submitted by civil society organizations that deal with human rights to treaty monitoring bodies at the United Nations and other international institutions in parallel with a government\'s official report regarding the human rights situation in a given country.

Erbil and Baghdad, 25 November 2010 – For the first time, Iraq, in partnership with the United Nations, is participating in the global 16 Days of Activism to End Violence Against Women Campaign which runs from 25 November, globally observed as the International Day to Eliminate Violence Against Women, through to 10 December, the International Day for Human Rights.

Baghdad, 12 November 2010- The Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations for Iraq (SRSG), Ad Melkert, welcomes the significant achievements made by the Iraqi political blocs in the government formation process.  He extends his congratulations to President Jalal Talabani for his re-election and welcomes the immediate step he has taken by tasking Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki with forming the government and looks forward to the completion of the process.  He also congratulates Mr. Osama Al-Nujaifi for his election as Parliament Speaker as well as the newly elected Deputy Parliament Speakers Mr. Qusai al-Suhail and Mr. Aref Tayfour.

10 November 2010 – The Security Council has strongly condemned the recent series of terrorist attacks in Iraq, including today’s bomb blasts in the capital, Baghdad, which have claimed the lives of scores of people and wounded hundreds of others.

 New York, 3 November 2010 - The Secretary-General strongly condemns the recent spate of terrorist attacks in Iraq in which scores of civilians lost their lives and hundreds more were wounded. The Secretary-General is appalled by these outrageous and unjustifiable acts of violence. He appeals to the people of Iraq to remain steadfast in the wake of such brutal violence and united in their commitment to a path of national reconciliation.

Baghdad, 1 November 2010- The Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations for Iraq (SRSG), Ad Melkert, strongly condemns the terrorist attack on Sayidat al-Nejat (Our Lady of Salvation) Catholic Church that took place last night in Baghdad. According to media reports,   tens of people were killed and many others were injured during the rescue operation of the worshipers who were taken hostage by the attackers.

UNAMI Celebrates with Iraq the World Statistics Day

20 October 2010-The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) celebrates today with Iraq the first World Statistics Day (WSD), an occasion designated by the United Nations General Assembly’s resolution 64/267. The UN Statistical Commission, during its 41st Session held in February 2010, selected 20 October as the day to celebrate WSD under the theme of ‘Celebrating the Many Achievements of Statistics: Service, Professionalism and Integrity’.

19 October 2010 (UN News Centre) – Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today vowed that today’s attack on a United Nations convoy in Iraq would not deter the Organization from continuing its efforts to assist the Iraqi people on their path to reconciliation and prosperity.

 

22 September 2010, Erbil, Iraq – The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), in close cooperation with the office of the Governor of Erbil and the Department of Foreign Relations, marked yesterday the annual International Day of Peace in Iraq. UNAMI, represented by Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General (DSRSG), Ms. Christine McNab, held a peace gathering at the Sami Abdul Rahman Park in Erbil in the presence of the President of the Kurdistan Regional Government, H.E. Mas’ud Barzani, the Governor of Erbil, Nawzad Hadi, Speaker of the Kurdistan Iraq Parliament, Kamal Kirkuki, Members of Parliament, the Diplomatic Corps, representatives from Civil Society Organisations and United Nations staff.
