Crucial issues preventing Iraqi women from reaching their full potential must be urgently addressed, UN Envoy says

Baghdad, 02 April 2014 – The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG), Mr. Nickolay Mladenov warmly welcomed today’s conference to present and discuss the recommendations from the Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) Committee.

The conference organized by UN Women and UNDP (United Nations Development Fund) in cooperation with the State Ministry for Women Affairs also provided a platform for government and civil society to discuss and explore implementation and follow up mechanisms and to formulate clear recommendations for future action.

“I warmly welcome this positive step towards fulfilling Iraq’s international obligations to human rights and specifically to women’s rights”, Mr. Mladenov said. “This opportunity is the result of the unique collaboration between the Government of Iraq and the civil society”, Mr. Mladenov underlined, urging both to work together on concrete measures to implement the CEDAW recommendations to ensure women’s human rights are protected.  “I also commend the Council of Ministers’ endorsement of the National Action Plan on UN Security Council Resolution 1325, and the National Strategy for the Advancement of Women”. “Crucial issues that prevent Iraqi women from reaching their full potential, issues like violence and challenges in access to justice, education, employment, and health need to be seriously addressed”, he stressed, assuring that “The UN stands ready to work with everyone in Iraq in their efforts to ensure proper implementation of the CEDAW recommendations”.

On 18 February 2014, the Iraqi government presented its 4th, 5th and 6th report to the Committee on the Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW).  This was the first time Iraq had reported to the international body in more than 10 years.  It was also the first time ever that Iraqi civil society presented a shadow report.
