The United Nations Come Together to Assist the People and Government of Iraq

Baghdad, 23 April 2015 – The Humanitarian Coordinator for Iraq, Ms. Lise Grande today led a visit of a high level UN delegation to newly erected camps hosting displaced people from Ramadi and Fallujah in Anbar province.

The delegation comprised Head of WFP Jane Pearce, Head of WHO Dr. Sayid Jaffar Hussein, a UNHCR representative Vincenzo Lionetti, an IOM representative Gudrun KRONER and Head of UN women Dr. Sadiq Syed, and was accompanied throughout the trip by a representative of the Joint Coordination and Monitoring Centre (JCMC) between the United Nations and the Iraqi government.

The tour included a visit to two out the seven newly erected camps in Baghdad and its surroundings, hosting displaced people from Ramadi and Falluja. In support of Government-led relief operations, WFP and UNICEF have distributed emergency food rations and hygiene kits to families in the Amarat area and IOM has provided  support kits to assist Anbar students and their families hosted in a college in Abu-Ghraib, areas visited during today's mission. This assistance is part of the UN's response to the more than 100,000 people displaced from Anbar province in the past two weeks.

“It was impressive to see the efforts the Government is making to assist the families displaced from Ramadi,” Lise Grande said. “Camps are being erected and life-saving assistance distributed. Communities are reaching out and helping people, welcoming them into their homes and sharing their food”, she added.

“We know this is a big and important operation. Humanitarian partners are supporting government efforts, providing emergency food rations, tents, showers, latrines and personal and household support kits”, Ms. Grande also highlighted.
