Read Out of the Secretary-General’s meeting with H.E. Haider al-Abadi, Prime Minister of Iraq

The Secretary-General met today with H.E. Haider al-Abadi, Prime Minister of the Republic of Iraq. They discussed the political and humanitarian situation in Iraq, as well as the next steps in Iraq’s campaign against Da’esh.

The Secretary-General commended Iraq for the progress made in the fight against Da’esh, facilitating the return of displaced people to their areas of origin, and its continuous assistance to Syrian refugees. He urged careful planning regarding the humanitarian needs of additional military campaigns against Da’esh, especially concerning Mosul. The Secretary-General further commended the Government of Iraq for facilitating the relocation of the residents of Camp Hurriya.
The Secretary-General urged Iraq to sign the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. The Secretary-General assured the Prime Minister of the continued support of the United Nations to Iraq.
