Baghdad, 14 September 2014 - After concluding a three-day visit to Iraq, UN Humanitarian Chief Valerie Amos said today that additional support is needed ahead of the long winter months for people who have been displaced by fighting, and for the communities supporting them.

BAGHDAD – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has welcomed a contribution of €2 million from the Government of Germany to help fund its emergency field kitchens in Iraq supplying hot meals to over a quarter of a million people.

WFP has established a number of field kitchens with its local partners in Dahuk Governorate since the August wave of displacement. However, the area remains a grave concern.

Up to 1.8 Million Iraqis nationwide have been displaced since January 2014

Erbil, 30 August 2014: A comprehensive count carried out jointly by the Kurdistan Region Government (KRG) and the United Nations indicates that some 850,000 Iraqis have been displaced and sought refuge in all three Kurdistan Region Governorates since January 2014. According to the Kurdistan Region Ministry of Planning and the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) the vast majority of the recently displaced people – 64 per cent - have sought refuge in the Duhok Governorate.

KARBALA, IRAQ – Food aid convoys from the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) have reached displaced Iraqis in Karbala, southwest of Baghdad, bringing the number of people receiving food assistance to over 700,000 people since the start of violence in mid-June.
