Baghdad/Iraq, 31 July 2016 - The European Commission (EU) has made a €7 million contribution to UNICEF in Iraq to support humanitarian aid initiatives for tens of thousands of families displaced by violence.
Baghdad, 05 July 2016 - An attack occurred at Al Salam camp (also known as Al-Takia camp) for displaced families, south of Baghdad in the early evening of 5 July, around two hours before families marked the end of the holy month of Ramadan.
Thousands more people continue to flee their homes as a military offensive to retake the eastern bank of the Tigris from extremist groups continues. The influx started in late March and new arrivals are overcrowding shelter facilities for newly displaced families in Debaga, Makhmur district, in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KR-I).

This is why UNHCR insists that the return process has to be carefully planned and carried out on the basis of the international humanitarian principles of voluntary, non-discriminatory, safe and sustainable returns.

Baghdad 27 June 2016: A UNHCR quick impact project to help an Iraqi farming community which had been been displaced by violence in Anbar Governorate to get back on their feet has been officially completed.
On 23 June 2016, the temporary premises of Fallujah University, located inside the Veterinary College, Baghdad University in Abu Ghraib, were inaugurated. With the generous contribution from the Government of Japan, the temporary premises of Fallujah University were established by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) providing 25 classrooms and 128 residential units that can accommodate 512 students, in addition to basic site infrastructure and an administration building. The project aimed at supporting displaced youth who bear enormous and long-lasting human, social and economic costs.

Conflict and persecution caused global forced displacement to escalate sharply in 2015 reaching the highest level ever recorded and representing immense human suffering, according to a report released today by UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency.
