Baghdad, 12 February 2017 – On 9 February, UNESCO, together with the Ministry of Education of Iraq, launched the piloting of a national Student Information Management System (SIMS). The SMIS aims at providing accurate and up-to-date information on the education system in Iraq, immediately available for effective decision-making.

Erbil, 27 December 2016 - The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) Human Rights Office (HRO), in coordination with the Kurdistan Region in Iraq Ministry of Education (MOE), Independent Board of Human Rights (IBHR) and the Ministry of Endowment & Religious Affairs organized the final meeting of the steering committee formed to review the curriculum of religious education and knowledge of religions for secondary education in Kurdistan.

Baghdad, 19 December 2016 - UNESCO and the European Union (EU) have signed an agreement to support primary and secondary education for IDP and refugee children and youth in Iraq.

Baghdad, Iraq – On the 27 September The United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) officially opened an intensive Risk Education Program Management training course that will cover the threats of Mines, explosives, Improvised Explosive Devices, as well as the management of Victim Assistance support.

BAGHDAD, Iraq, 7 August 2016—Conflict continues to flair across Iraq as the government engages in military operations to systematically reclaim areas under control of armed opposition groups. Since May 2016, these operations have led to additional displacement of approximately 200,000 civilians, including over 85,000 people in Anbar Governorate. In addition, military activities in areas around Mosul have led to 18,000 families being displaced. Half of all the displaced people are children who have missed out on up to two years of education.

Erbil, 2 June 2016 – Human rights education for children and youth in post-conflict environment will help protect them and create strong basis for stability and hope for the future. For this, the United Nations is launching a project entitled “Human Rights Education in Schools” in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq for the coming two academic years.

Iraq - IOM facilitated a study visit this week for government officials from the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs (MoLSA) and the Bureau of Migration and Displacement (BMD) in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI) to France, Belgium and the Netherlands.

Erbil, 28 November 2015 – Kurdistan Region joined the United Nations and the rest of the world on Thursday, 26 November, to mark the start of the world campaign for 16 Days to Eliminate Gender-Based Violence. The 16 days against gender-based violence puts the human rights of women and girls at the centre of the world’s and Iraq’s attention. In Kurdistan region, the campaign of this year brings attention to the difficult situation of displaced girls, women, and their right to education. As the crisis continues to deepen, humanitarian needs among the affected populations are escalating, in particular, for women and girls. Gender-based violence is one of the most significant features of this crisis and has had a major impact on women and girls and their ability and willingness to access education. Girls are particularly vulnerable to multiple forms of violence and the majority are out-of-school, experience growing levels of sexual violence, harassment, early marriage, exploitation and abuse, and are restricted by their families from moving freely.

Wednesday 29 April 2015: Under the auspices of Haidar Al-Abadi, Prime Minister of Iraq, UNESCO and the Government of Iraq launched today an ambitious three year project titled ‘Reforming technical and vocational education and training in Iraq’ that is funded by the European Union.
