GENEVA (2 November 2017) – A UN report concludes that the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL/Daesh) perpetrated serious and systematic violations that amount to “international crimes” during the nine-month military campaign to liberate Mosul City in Iraq.

Erbil/Sulaymaniyah, 19 October 2017 - UNAMI Human Rights Office conducted on 16-19 October a specialized training and round table discussion in Kurdistan Region of Iraq on “Follow up on Universal Periodic Review in Line with the Regional Plan of Action (RPA) and UN Human Rights Treaty Bodies Recommendations” for representatives of civil society organizations.

Kalar/Garmiyan Administration, Iraq, 3 October 2017 – The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) Human Rights Office (HRO), within its programme of technical support to civil society organizations, launched a “Training of Trainers on Training Methodologies in the Field of Human Rights Promotion and Coexistence” in Jalawla District/Diyala.

How Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) are treated in terms of getting access to food, shelter and medical services and whether their rights to enjoy these basic rights are not being violated, is a forefront activity of the UNAMI Human Rights Office, under its work on protection of civilians.

Erbil, Iraq, 14 August 2017 – A five-day training session for Iraqi and Kurdistan Region’s Ministerial Committees on following up the implementation of the Universal Periodic Reports (UPR) action plans was launched in Erbil. The training session is part of the programme of technical support provided by the Human Rights Office (HRO) of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), the Norwegian People Aid (NPA) and Public Aid Organization (PAO) to the Iraqi and Kurdistan Region institutions.

GENEVA (11 July 2017) – The retaking of Mosul from ISIL by Iraqi Government forces, supported by their International Coalition partners, marks a significant turning point in the conflict, but Iraq faces a series of human rights challenges which, if left unaddressed, are likely to spark further violence and civilian suffering, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein has warned.
