Baghdad, 18 April 2013 - The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG), Mr. Martin Kobler, expresses his deep concern that Iraq continues to implement the death penalty; the most recent execution of 21 prisoners took place on 16 April 2013.
Baghdad, 8 April 2013 – According to figures released today by UNAMI, a minimum of 229 civilians were killed and a further 853 were wounded in acts of terrorism and armed violence in Iraq during March 2013. A further 227 members of the Iraqi security forces were killed and 300 were wounded as a result of such attacks.
The UNAMI Human Rights Office (HRO) held the second in a series of two workshops in Najaf on 19-20 March to build and strengthen the capacity of 30 civil society organizations (CSOs) from Najaf and Diwaniya governorates to conduct human rights monitoring in their respective locations. Funded through UNAMI’s Quick Impact Projects (QIPs) programme, the workshop was organized in collaboration with the Cultural Humanitarian Iraq of Future Organization (CHIFO), a Najaf-based CSO.

On 16 March, the Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (DSRSG), Gyorgy Busztin visited the newly invested Patriarch of the Chaldean Catholic community, His Beatitude Louis Raphael I Sako at his residence in Baghdad, to congratulate him, on behalf of the United Nations, on his election.
On 22-23 December, as part of its celebrations to mark the International Day for Persons with Disabilities, the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq, together with the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), the Iraqi Parliamentary Committee for Human Rights and the NGO, the Iraqi Alliance for Disabilities Organization (IADO), organized a conference to discuss recommendations on how to implement the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Iraq.
The UNAMI Human Rights Office and the Iraqi NGO Cultural Humanitarian Iraq of Future Organization (CHIFO) organized a workshop on human rights monitoring and advocacy in Najaf city on 4-5 February 2013. Funded by UNAMI through its Quick Impact Projects (QIPs) programme, the workshop brought together around 30 civil society representatives from Najaf, Kufa and Diwaniya governorate and focused on reviewing the international covenants as well as the national legal framework.
