Iraq – On Tuesday (1/11) the IOM the IOM Iraq Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) – the standard data source used to guide the humanitarian response – recorded a total of 17,916 individuals displaced by military operations that began on 17 October around the Mosul region.

This is a continuation of a series of articles that are focusing on providing a Voice for Dignity in our Humanity. Through these articles, UN Women Iraq is lending a voice for advocacy of women and girls who have been silenced and restricted for more than two years by ISIS rule in Mosul. Part 2 focuses on the story of the Ahmad family and a University Graduate, whom I shall refer to as Fatima.

When the UN Women Iraq team visited an IDP camp to distribute urgent necessity kits, one little nine year old girl, whom I will call Aisha caught my attention. She ran up to me crying. I found out that she was among the mass wave of IDPs who recently arrived from Mosul to the IDP camp that day.

29 October, 2016, Iraq - UN Women has joined partners in providing emergency assistance in camps and host communities impacted by the Mosul operations. Since the Mosul operations began on 17 October 2016, the humanitarian crisis has deepened, with more than 15,000 individuals displaced and an anticipated 1.2 million expected as the operations continue.

Baghdad, Iraq, 29 October 2016 – At a conference in Baghdad on violence against women, Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General (SRSG) for Iraq Ján Kubiš said the United Nations continues to stand in solidarity with the female victims of Daesh crimes and insists on full accountability for atrocities perpetrated by the terrorist group. He called for the adoption of the Family Protection bill by the Iraqi parliament and urged that women be part of the post-Daesh political, stabilization and reconstruction efforts.

GENEVA (28 October 2016) – Credible reports suggest that ISIL has been forcing tens of thousands of people from their homes in sub-districts around Mosul and has been forcibly relocating civilians inside the city itself since operations began on 17 October to restore Iraqi Government control over Mosul.

Erbil, Iraq, 26 October 2016: UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, has begun airlifting more than 7,000 tents to Erbil from emergency warehouses in Dubai and Amman to assist Iraqis displaced as a result of the ongoing Mosul offensive.
