Baghdad, 29 December 2016 - The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) condemns the abduction of Iraqi journalist, Ms. Afrah Shawqi, by unidentified gunmen from her home on Monday night.
Baghdad, 15 August 2016 - The Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General (DSRSG) for Iraq, Gyorgy Busztin, strongly condemned the brutal killing of a journalist in Dohuk City in Kurdistan Region of Iraq, and called on the Government of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq to implement urgent measures to guarantee the safety of all journalists and media professionals.

On the occasion of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, UNESCO in cooperation with the Iraqi Journalists' Syndicate and the Iraqi High Commission of Human Rights organized a seminar on 12 November 2015 in Baghdad on promoting the procedures of the investigation of crimes committed against journalists in Iraq.

The recent assassination of media workers and the increased acts of intimidation, harassment and violence to which they are exposed, dramatically testify to the life threatening risks under which journalists work in the areas controlled by ISIS.
