Baghdad, 19 December 2016 - UNESCO and the European Union (EU) have signed an agreement to support primary and secondary education for IDP and refugee children and youth in Iraq.

Baghdad, Iraq, 2 November 2016 - UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, has this week begun distributing essential winter items to 1.2 million displaced Iraqis, including families recently displaced due to the current Mosul offensive, and to communities across Iraq that are hosting them. A total of 178,000 Syrian refugees will also benefit. The distributions come even though UNHCR’s winter assistance programme, budgeted at $120 m, is just half-funded with a $60 million funding gap.

Baghdad, Iraq, 31 October 2016 - UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, and the Permanent Committee for Refugees at the Ministry of Interior have today signed a Memorandum of Understanding to enhance the protection of refugees and asylum seekers in Iraq. The agreement was signed by Dr Aqeel Mahmoud Al-Khazali, Senior Deputy Minister of Interior, and Bruno Geddo, UNHCR’s Representative in Iraq.

Baghdad, Iraq, 15 October 2016 - The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, has begun a four-day visit to Iraq, as the country faces a worsening humanitarian situation and as military developments in Mosul could result in one of the largest man-made displacement crises in many years.

After weeks of anticipation, auditions and excitement, the “Refugees Got Talent!” contest organized by UNHCR, the UN refugee agency, culminated in its grand finale on World Refugee Day (WRD), 20 June, at Arbat Refugee Camp, Sulaymaniyah. The event was one of dozens of events organized by UNHCR in Iraq to mark WRD 2016, the global theme of which was “Hopes and Dreams.”

Baghdad, 16 June 2016 – Beginning of Ramadan. In the dry heat of the morning, the streets are deserted except in front of Qushtapa refugee camp primary health centre. Several people are sitting on benches in front of the facility, some are staring blankly. A doctor appears at the doorway of the centre and gesticulates to patients whose faces light up at the knowledge that here they will be treated well and receive the care that they need.
