Erbil, Iraq, 12 March 2017 – The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) Human Rights Office (HRO), within its program of technical support to academic institutions in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, held four training sessions for students of the Faculty of Law and International Relations of Cihan University in Erbil. Under the title “United Nations mechanisms for the protection of human rights in time of peace and conflict”, four training sessions delivered by HRO focused on UN mechanism for the protection of human rights, UN role in armed conflict, Rights of the child and role of UNICEF in the protection of children, and UN Charter and UDHR. Ten female and ten male students participated in the training which was held from 1 to 7 March.

Baghdad, 16 February 2017 - The United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS), the Government of Japan and the Ministry of Interior in Iraq held a certification ceremony for fifteen Iraqi police officers who have successfully completed the Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) Defeat Course (basic). This project is funded by a generous contribution from the Government of Japan and directly supports the development of national capacity to respond to explosive threats in recently retaken areas.

UNAMI Human Rights Training in Suleimaniya

Erbil/Suleimaniya, 22 December 2016 - The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) Human Rights Office conducted a specialized training course “Universal Periodic Review and UN Mechanisms for the Protection of Human Rights” in Suleimaniya, from 20 to 22 December 2016, for representatives of civil society organizations and the Kurdistan Independent Board of Human Rights Staff.

Baghdad, 13 December 2016 - UNAMI Human Right Office (HRO) held a day long training for journalists, civil society organisations, and human rights activists on protection of civilians during armed conflict.

Baghdad, 28 November 2016 - The United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) held a certification ceremony for twelve Iraqi police officers who have successfully completed the first Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) Defeat Course (Basic). This project was funded by the European Union (EU) and directly supports the development of the national security sector and local capacity to deal with explosive threats in recently retaken areas. The four-week training course was held at Salman Pak Police EOD training centre.

Erbil, 13 November 2016 – The UNAMI Human Rights Office (HRO) conducted a training course for youth leaders in Ninewa on Community Reconciliation and Social Cohesion on 11 and 12 November 2016, enabling 35 course participants to be acquainted with accountability and reconciliation principles, both on the theoretical and practical levels.

Erbil, 5 November 2016- Under the auspices of the Provincial Council of Ninewa, UNAMI Human Rights Office (HRO) inaugurated a training course for civil society network in Ninewa on Community Reconciliation and Social Cohesion for representatives of civil society actors from Ninewa Governorate. The training course organized on 5 and 6 November 2016 will allow the 30 course participants to be acquainted with accountability and reconciliation principles, both on the theoretical and practical levels.
