Erbil, Iraq, 19 November 2017 – In the aftermath of the powerful earthquake that struck the Iraq-Iran border last Sunday evening, the office of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Iraq scaled up its emergency intervention.

The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), in collaboration with the Implementation and Follow-up Committee for National Reconciliation in the Office of the Prime Minister, is hosting a series of Roundtable Discussions on the National Settlement: Prospects and Challenges for participants from across the country. Mr. Mohammed Al-Najjar, Senior Political Affairs Officer with UNAMI, tells us more about the gist of the discussions.

Baghdad, 17 November 2017 – Tribal sheikhs, religious leaders, academics, political party representatives and civil society representatives from Diyala and Anbar Provinces met on Wednesday 15th and Thursday 16th November in two separate meetings in Baghdad as part of a series of roundtable discussions under the theme ”National Settlement: Prospects and Challenges” aiming at creating an enabling environment for Iraqi national reconciliation.

Baghdad, Iraq, 15 November 2017 -- In response to the recent earthquake in the border region between Islamic Republic of Iran and Iraq, WHO’s office in Iraq has deployed a medical team supported with 3 ambulances, 4 tents and emergency lifesaving supplies to Sulaymaniyah governorate in northern Iraq. The health supplies, sufficient for 200 surgical operations, have been prepositioned at the Emergency Hospital in Sulaymaniyah governorate.

West Anbar – IOM, the UN Migration Agency, medical teams are providing assistance to nearly 1,000 primary health care beneficiaries, including displaced persons, returnees and host communities, per week in Anbar Governorate.

Basra, 01 November 2017 – The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), jointly with UNWOMEN and in coordination with the Implementation and Follow Up National Reconciliation Committee (IFNRC) of the Office of Iraq’s Prime Minister, held a consultative forum with women leaders and members of the Basra, Muthanna, Thi Qar and Missan Provincial Councils in Basra on 01 November 2017 with the focus on strengthening women’s political participation. This is the fourth such meeting within the context of observing the Global Open Day and the 17th Anniversary of UN Security Council resolution 1325.
