GENEVA , 25 August 2014 – UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay on Monday condemned the appalling, widespread and systematic deprivation of human rights in Iraq by ISIL (the self-proclaimed “Islamic State”) and associated forces.

Baghdad, 23 August 2014– The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG), Mr. NickolayMladenov, is seriously alarmed by reports regarding the inhuman conditions of the inhabitants of the northern town of Amerli, besieged and cut off from food and water supplies by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) armed group for almost two months.

New York, 22 August 2014 - The Secretary-General condemns in the strongest terms the reported attack on a mosque in Diyala Province, said to have killed dozens of Sunni worshippers.  Attacks on places of worship are completely unacceptable and are prohibited under international law.

Duhok: Shelter from the Storm

As conflict rages in Iraq and in neighbouring Syria, tens of thousands of displaced people have sought refuge in Duhok Province. UNFPA is working around the clock to meet the needs of both Syrian refugees and internally displaced Iraqis in the area.
